Hi, I'm a Bahraini citizen planning to start a business in the UAE. My business partner is from Europe. Will banks treat my application differently because I'm a GCC national?

Hi! I'm Shilpa from the Banking Team at DhanGuard.

Yes, in many situations, GCC nationals enjoy certain banking advantages compared to applicants from outside the GCC. These benefits don't mean automatic approval, but they can make the onboarding process simpler because of the economic agreements between GCC member countries.

For example, banks may:

  • Accept a simpler documentation process for identity and residency verification.
  • Allow GCC citizens to open accounts without the standard UAE residence visa requirements that apply to many expatriates.
  • Offer easier access to certain banking products, including credit facilities, subject to the bank's internal policies.

For business bank accounts, the focus still remains on your company. Banks will review your trade license, ownership structure, source of funds, and expected business activity before approving the account. Even if one of the shareholders is a GCC national, the business must still satisfy all compliance and KYC requirements.

If your company has shareholders from different countries, the bank may carry out additional checks on the non-GCC partners, but that doesn't mean the application will be rejected. It simply means the compliance team will evaluate each shareholder individually.

Before choosing a bank, I'd recommend discussing your ownership structure with the relationship manager. Some banks have more experience handling multinational shareholder structures and can guide you on the most suitable account for your business.
