I'm an entrepreneur from Kenya. I've heard that African business owners face more bank account rejections in the UAE. Is that true?
Hi, I'm Kuldeep
This is a concern I hear quite often, and the answer requires a bit of context.
There is no rule in the UAE that prevents African nationals from opening business bank accounts. However, applicants from certain jurisdictions may go through more detailed compliance reviews because banks follow international AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and risk management standards.
What usually influences the bank's decision isn't your nationality alone—it's the overall strength of your application.
Banks typically pay close attention to:
- Whether your business activity is clearly defined on the trade license.
- The source of your investment funds and expected business income.
- Your company's operational presence, such as an office lease or genuine business activity.
- Complete and consistent KYC and UBO documentation.
Applications are more likely to face delays when the business purpose is vague, important documents are missing, or the expected transaction profile doesn't match the licensed activity. For example, a company with a broad "general trading" license but no supplier details or business plan may receive additional questions regardless of the owner's nationality.
My advice is not to assume rejection based on your passport. Instead, focus on presenting a well-documented business with a clear commercial purpose. Choosing the right bank for your business model and submitting a strong compliance file from the beginning can significantly improve your chances of approval.
