Hi, I'm Saif khan from Egypt. I'm planning to start my first business in the UAE, but I'm confused about the Free Zone setup process. How do I set up a Free Zone company, and what are the main steps involved?
Hi Saif, I am Nurain Zubair Shaikh (Sales Manager at Dhanguard)
Starting a Free Zone company in the UAE is much simpler than many entrepreneurs expect. The key is choosing the right Free Zone based on your business activity rather than just selecting the cheapest option.
Here's how the process typically works:
The first step is deciding what your business will actually do. Your business activity determines the type of licence you'll need and also influences which Free Zone is the best fit.
Once that's clear, you can choose a Free Zone that aligns with your goals. For example, DMCC is popular for trading, commodities, and technology businesses, IFZA is known for flexible and affordable business setups, Shams is a preferred choice for media and creative companies, while RAKEZ works well for manufacturing and logistics businesses.
After selecting the Free Zone, you'll choose your company structure, whether you're registering as a single shareholder company (FZE) or a multi-shareholder company (FZCO). The next steps include reserving your company name, submitting the application, and providing the required documents, such as passport copies, proof of address, photographs, and, where applicable, a business plan or NOC.
Once your application is approved, you'll complete the licence payment, select your office or flexi-desk package, and receive your trade licence. After that, you can move on to opening your corporate bank account, applying for your establishment card, processing investor or employee visas, and registering for Corporate Tax with the Federal Tax Authority if required.
One suggestion I'd always give is don't choose a Free Zone based only on the licence price. Consider factors such as banking support, visa eligibility, office requirements, renewal costs, and whether the Free Zone suits your long-term business plans. Making the right choice at the beginning can save both time and money as your company grows.
