Hi, I'm Kuwar from Abu Dhabi. A client paid me by cheque, but the bank rejected it because of a signature mismatch. The issuer says they signed it correctly. What should I do now?
As a Banking Consultant at Dhanguard, I frequently help business owners understand why cheque-related issues happen and what the quickest resolution is. A signature mismatch is usually a technical issue, not the same as a cheque bouncing due to insufficient funds, but it should still be resolved without delay.
If your UAE business bank account cheque is returned because of a signature mismatch, don't panic. The first step is to collect the official cheque return memo from your bank. This document clearly mentions the rejection reason and will be useful when speaking to the cheque issuer.
Next, contact the person or company that issued the cheque and inform them about the rejection. In most cases, the solution is straightforward, they can issue a new cheque with the correct signature or simply transfer the payment directly to your bank account.
Also remember that banks may charge a small cheque return fee (typically around AED 50) for technical returns. While this isn't treated as a criminal offence like a cheque returned for insufficient funds, it's best to resolve it quickly to avoid unnecessary payment delays.
If the issuer believes the signature matches their bank records but the cheque was still rejected, ask them to verify their specimen signature with their bank before issuing a replacement. This helps prevent the same issue from happening again.
