I'm winding down my UAE business and want to close its corporate bank account properly. Are there any payments or documents I should take care of before asking the bank to close it?
Hi Robert,
I’m Nurain, and closing a UAE business bank account is usually straightforward, but it is important to complete a few steps before submitting the closure request. Otherwise, pending payments, liabilities, or unused banking instruments can delay the process.
Step 1: Clear the Account
First, settle any outstanding obligations connected to the account.
- Transfer or withdraw the remaining funds.
- Clear outstanding loans, overdrafts, credit cards, or other banking facilities.
- Make sure there are no pending transactions or unpaid bank charges.
Step 2: Cancel Recurring Payments
Before closing the account, cancel any:
- Standing instructions
- Direct debits
- Recurring supplier payments
- Utility payments
- Subscription payments
This prevents a payment from being rejected after the account has been closed.
Step 3: Save Your Banking Records
Download your historical account statements, transaction records, and other important banking documents before closure. Once the account is closed, your online banking access or access to historical records may be restricted.
Step 4: Submit the Closure Request
Complete the bank's official business account closure form and submit it through the bank's required channel.
Depending on the bank and account structure, you may need:
- Trade License and company documents
- Identification of authorized signatories
- Board resolution or corporate authorization approving closure
- Account details and closure instructions
Some banks may allow parts of the process through their corporate banking platform, while others require an authorized signatory to visit a branch.
Step 5: Return Banking Instruments
If applicable, return or cancel:
- Unused company cheque books
- Corporate debit cards
- Other banking instruments issued against the account
The bank may require confirmation that these have been surrendered or cancelled before completing the closure.
Step 6: Get Written Confirmation
Once the account has been closed, ask the bank for an account closure confirmation or No-Liability Letter.
This is useful for your company's records and can help demonstrate that there are no outstanding obligations with the bank.
How Long Does It Take?
A straightforward business account closure can typically take around 3–10 business days, although the exact timeframe depends on the bank and whether there are outstanding liabilities, pending transactions, or additional compliance checks.
My advice is not to transfer out the final balance and immediately assume the account is closed. Wait for written confirmation from the bank that the account has actually been terminated.
