Hi, I'm Ahmed Khan from Pakistan. I recently completed my company registration in the UAE and my next step is opening a corporate bank account. I've heard different timelines from different people, some say it takes a week, while others mention more than a month. What is the actual timeline, and what factors can affect it?

I’m Shilpa from DhanGuard Consultancy, and this is probably one of the most misunderstood parts of starting a business in the UAE. There isn't a fixed timeline because every application goes through a compliance review, and the duration depends on the company's profile.

As a general guideline, opening a corporate bank account in the UAE usually takes between 2 and 6 weeks.

That said, there are exceptions:

  • Simple SME and Free Zone businesses with complete documentation can sometimes have their accounts opened in 5 to 10 working days.
  • Companies with offshore structures, multiple foreign shareholders, or complex ownership may wait anywhere between 8 and 14 weeks, as banks carry out additional compliance checks.

From what I've seen, four factors have the biggest impact on the timeline:

1. Your Company Structure

A straightforward Free Zone or SME company is often easier to assess than an offshore entity or a business with multiple holding companies. Offshore structures generally receive the most detailed scrutiny.

2. The Bank You Choose

Not every bank works at the same pace. Banks such as Emirates NBD and RAKBANK are well known for serving SMEs and can often process applications more quickly. International banks like HSBC and Standard Chartered usually have more extensive compliance procedures, which can increase the overall processing time.

3. Ownership Structure

If your company has multiple Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs), overseas shareholders, or shareholders from jurisdictions that require Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), the bank may request additional documentation before making a decision.

4. How Well Your Documents Are Prepared

The most common cause of delays isn't the bank, it's incomplete applications. Missing source-of-funds documents, vague business plans, or foreign documents that haven't been properly notarized or attested can all slow down the review process.

One piece of advice I always give clients is not to judge the timeline based on someone else's experience. Two companies with the same trade license can have completely different account opening timelines depending on their ownership, business activity, and the quality of their documentation. Preparing everything correctly from the beginning is often the fastest way to get your account approved.

For a UAE company with a complete document file and a straightforward business profile, business bank account opening can typically take around 1–3 weeks. However, the exact timeline depends on the bank, company structure, shareholders, business activity, and how quickly the KYC and compliance checks are completed.

Typical Account Opening Timeline

  1. Document Preparation – 1–3 Days
Before submitting the application, prepare your:
  • Valid Trade License
  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • MOA/AOA and amendments
  • Share certificates or UBO structure
  • Board Resolution
  • Office lease or Ejari
  • Passport, visa, and Emirates ID copies
  • Business profile and financial information

Having these documents ready from the beginning can prevent unnecessary back-and-forth with the bank.

  1. Initial Bank Review – 2–5 Business Days
The bank reviews the company's legal structure, ownership, business activity, expected transaction volumes, and the background of the shareholders and authorized signatories.
  2. KYC & Compliance Review – 5–10 Business Days
This is usually the stage that determines how quickly the account moves forward. The bank may ask for additional information such as:
  • Business plan and financial forecasts
  • 3–6 months of personal or corporate bank statements
  • Client or supplier contracts
  • Sample invoices
  • Source-of-funds information
  • Details of expected incoming and outgoing transactions
  1. Final Approval & Account Activation
Once compliance is satisfied, the bank completes the approval process and provides the account details and digital banking access.

What Can Make It Faster or Slower?

A simple UAE company with one or two shareholders, clear business activities, complete documentation, and a straightforward source of funds can generally move faster.

On the other hand, complex ownership structures, non-resident shareholders, multiple jurisdictions, high-risk activities, or incomplete commercial documentation can extend the review considerably.

So, I wouldn't advise planning around a fixed number of days. 1–3 weeks is a practical expectation for a clean application, but the bank's compliance review ultimately determines the timeline.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is preparing only the incorporation documents. For a new company, your business profile, expected transactions, source of funds, and supporting commercial documents can be just as important as your Trade License.
