Bank rejected my account application — no reason given, what now?

Hi, I'm Marco Silva from Brazil. I recently applied for a corporate bank account in the UAE, but the bank informed me that my application had been declined without providing any explanation. My company is legally registered, and I submitted all the documents they requested. What should I do next, and is it still possible to open a business bank account with another bank?

I’m Kuldeep, Head of the Banking Team at DhanGuard, and I understand how frustrating this situation can be. The first thing I'd like to reassure you is that a bank rejection doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong with your business.

In the UAE, banks are not obligated to disclose the exact reason for declining a business account. This is part of their compliance obligations under Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations. In many cases, the decision is triggered by internal risk policies or automated compliance systems rather than a single issue.

Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Missing or inconsistent KYC information.
  • Incomplete details about the Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs).
  • A trade license with broad business activities but limited explanation of actual operations.
  • Business sectors that fall outside a particular bank's risk appetite.
  • Limited local business presence or insufficient supporting documents.

Rather than immediately applying to another bank, I'd recommend taking a structured approach.

Start by Understanding the Type of Rejection

If you worked with a relationship manager, ask whether your application was declined because of missing documentation or due to the bank's internal policy. While they may not provide a detailed explanation, they can sometimes indicate whether it was a documentation issue or a broader compliance decision.

Avoid Submitting Multiple Applications Immediately

Many business owners respond to a rejection by applying to several banks at once. In practice, this often creates more complications. It's better to identify and resolve the original issue before submitting another application.

Strengthen Your Documentation

Before applying again, review your application and make sure it includes:

  • A valid Trade License and updated company documents.
  • Passport, Emirates ID, and visa copies for all shareholders and authorized signatories.
  • Six months of personal or corporate bank statements where applicable.
  • A clear explanation of your source of funds.
  • Client contracts, supplier agreements, invoices, or other evidence of genuine business activity.
  • Proof of your UAE business premises, such as an office lease or flexi-desk agreement.

Consider Alternative Banking Options

Not every bank has the same risk appetite. Depending on your business profile, you may have better success with digital banking platforms such as Wio Business or Mashreq NeoBiz, or with other commercial banks that are more familiar with your type of business.

If You Believe the Decision Was Unfair

In situations where you suspect your application has been affected by a legal or compliance issue and the bank refuses to provide any guidance, you can escalate the matter through Sanadak, the Central Bank of the UAE's independent ombudsman for financial complaints.

One final piece of advice: don't view a rejection as the end of the process. In many cases, businesses that are initially declined are able to successfully open an account after improving their documentation and choosing a bank that better aligns with their business activity and risk profile.
