Hi, I'm Michael George from the UK. I'm in the process of setting up my UAE company and have been looking at HSBC for my business banking. Since my business is still in its early stages, I'm trying to keep banking costs low. Does HSBC offer a zero-balance business account, or is there a minimum balance that I need to maintain?

I’m Kuldeep, Head of the Banking Team at DhanGuard. One question I hear quite often from new business owners is whether HSBC has a zero-balance business account. The short answer is no.

HSBC Business Bank Account  primarily offers tiered business banking solutions rather than a guaranteed zero-balance account. While it has products designed for businesses with lower banking requirements, such as the BSP Basic or Standard Corporate Account, these are still subject to specific banking conditions.

For most standard corporate accounts, HSBC typically expects businesses to maintain an average monthly balance of AED 20,000* (or the equivalent in another currency). If the required balance isn't maintained, a monthly maintenance fee of around AED 150–200* may apply.

Another point that many business owners overlook is HSBC's relationship balance concept. Depending on the banking package, the bank may consider your combined relationship balance, which can be up to AED 100,000*, rather than looking at a single account in isolation.

Unlike some digital or startup-focused banks, HSBC evaluates every business individually. Factors such as your expected transaction volume, monthly turnover, business activity, and overall company profile play an important role in the approval process. Because of this, you shouldn't assume that a zero-balance arrangement will be available simply because your business is new.

If you're comparing business banks, my advice is to evaluate more than just the minimum balance requirement. Consider whether the bank's services, international payment capabilities, trade finance support, and relationship management align with your long-term business goals.

No, HSBC Business Bank Accounts in the UAE do not generally offer a permanent, guaranteed zero-balance current account for businesses. Most business banking packages are structured around a minimum average balance or a monthly service fee if the required balance is not maintained.

Account Structure and Fees

  • Minimum Balance: Standard HSBC business packages typically require maintaining a minimum average monthly relationship or account balance.
  • Fall-Below Charges: If the required balance is not maintained, a monthly maintenance or fall-below fee may apply.
  • Business Evaluation: HSBC generally reviews each business application based on factors such as the company's activity, expected turnover, transaction volumes, and overall banking relationship.
  • Startup Consideration: Businesses looking for a true zero-balance account may find digital banking platforms or other UAE banks more suitable than HSBC.

For businesses considering HSBC, I would recommend checking the specific account package and applicable charges before applying, as requirements can vary depending on the company's profile and banking needs.
