Hi, I'm Ahmed from Egypt. I'm one of the shareholders in a new UAE company. Will the bank conduct a criminal background check on me during the KYC process?

Hi Ahmed,

This is a common question, especially among foreign investors.

In most cases, the answer is no. UAE banks do not normally ask for a police clearance certificate or conduct a formal criminal record check in your home country as part of the standard KYC process for opening a business bank account.

Instead, banks focus on verifying that you and your business meet their compliance requirements. This typically includes confirming your identity, understanding your company's ownership structure, and checking whether your name appears on international sanctions lists, Politically Exposed Person (PEP) databases, or adverse media reports.

There are situations where additional checks may be required. For example, if your business operates in a highly regulated industry, your application involves a higher-risk jurisdiction, or there are compliance concerns during the review, the bank may request further information or supporting documents. Likewise, certain UAE visa categories or regulated business activities may require a police clearance certificate as part of a separate government process.

My advice is to provide complete and accurate information from the beginning. Being transparent about your business activities, ownership structure, and source of funds helps the bank complete its compliance review more efficiently and reduces the chances of unnecessary follow-up requests.
