Hi,I'm James from the United States, and my business partner is a UAE national. We're setting up a company together. Will having shareholders from different nationalities make it difficult to open a UAE business bank account?
Hi James,
Not necessarily. A company with shareholders from different nationalities can absolutely open a UAE business bank account. What matters most to the bank is whether the ownership structure is transparent and the business can satisfy all compliance requirements.
In your example, the UAE shareholder doesn't automatically guarantee approval, and the US shareholder doesn't automatically make the application difficult. The bank will simply review each shareholder based on the regulations that apply to them.
For instance, if a US citizen is part of the company, the bank will usually request additional tax-related declarations under FATCA, while all shareholders will be screened for KYC, sanctions compliance, and source of funds.
Before submitting your application, make sure you have:
- A valid UAE trade license and incorporation documents.
- Passport copies of all shareholders.
- Emirates ID for UAE resident shareholders, where applicable.
- A clear explanation of your business activities.
- Recent bank statements or documents supporting the source of funds.
One thing many founders overlook is consistency. The ownership details, business plan, expected transactions, and licensing activity should all align. If there are contradictions between these documents, the compliance team is likely to ask additional questions, regardless of the shareholders' nationalities.
If your paperwork is complete and your business model is straightforward, mixed-nationality ownership is generally not a barrier to opening a corporate bank account in the UAE.
