I’m planning to start a company in a Dubai free zone. What should I do first, and how long does the setup usually take?

Hi Ethan,

I’m Sagar from DhanGuard. Setting up a company in a Dubai free zone is generally a straightforward process and can often be completed in around 3 to 10 working days, provided your documents and approvals are in order. Free zone structures also generally allow 100% foreign ownership.

The process usually works like this:

  1. Choose Your Business Activity: Decide whether you need a commercial, professional, industrial or another activity available under the chosen free zone.
  2. Select the Right Free Zone: Compare free zones based on your industry, budget, location, office requirements and future plans. For example, DMCC may suit commodity and trading businesses, while other zones may be more suitable for general services or digital businesses.
  3. Select Your Legal Structure: Depending on the number of shareholders and business structure, you may establish an FZE, FZCO or branch.
  4. Reserve Your Trade Name: Submit a proposed company name to the selected free zone authority and obtain approval.
  5. Choose an Office Solution: Depending on the licence and visa requirements, you can choose a physical office, flexi-desk or an eligible virtual office solution.
  6. Submit Documents and Pay Fees: Provide the required application forms, passport copies, shareholder information and, where requested, a business plan. After approval, pay the applicable registration and licence fees.
  7. Receive Your Licence: Once the application is approved, the free zone authority issues the trade licence and incorporation documents.
  8. Process Visas and Banking: If you require UAE residency, apply for the relevant visas and complete the immigration formalities. You can then approach a UAE bank to open a corporate bank account, subject to its KYC and compliance checks.

My advice is not to choose a free zone based only on the cheapest licence package. Your business activity, visa requirements, workspace, banking needs and future expansion plans should all be considered before making the decision.
