Hi  I'm Michael from Cyprus. I'm planning to launch a forex brokerage business in the UAE. I've heard that banks are reluctant to open accounts for this industry. Are there any banks that still accept forex or trading-related businesses?

Hello Michael,

I'm Deepak Pant, a Banking Consultant specializing in UAE corporate banking and compliance. This is one of the questions I receive most often from entrepreneurs entering the financial services sector.

The short answer is yes, but only if your business is properly licensed and can satisfy the bank's compliance requirements.

Forex and financial trading businesses are considered high-risk by most UAE banks because they deal with international fund flows and are subject to strict anti-money laundering regulations. That doesn't mean banks refuse every application—it simply means they carry out a much deeper review before making a decision.

Banks such as Mashreq Bank, Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD), and Wio Bank may consider applications from regulated forex businesses. However, they'll expect to see that your company has the right regulatory approvals and a genuine operating model.

A strong application usually includes:

  • A valid licence issued by recognised regulators such as DFSA (DIFC) or FSRA (ADGM) where applicable.
  • Clear AML and compliance policies.
  • Evidence of the source of wealth and source of funds.
  • Client onboarding procedures and sample agreements.
  • Information about your payment partners and transaction flows.
  • A physical office and, ideally, a resident director in the UAE.

One mistake I see applicants make is approaching banks before their compliance documentation is fully prepared. Even with the right licence, an incomplete compliance file can delay the process or result in the application being declined.

If your business is transparent, properly regulated, and backed by strong documentation, there are banks in the UAE that are willing to work with forex and financial trading companies. The key is approaching the right bank with the right level of preparation.
