Hi, I'm Elly. My business has no staff and no residence visas under the company. I renewed my trade license but left the establishment card expired because I believed it wasn't necessary anymore. Is that okay, or could it affect my business later?
I’m Shilpa from DhanGuard Consultancy. This is something many business owners ask when they're trying to reduce annual renewal costs.
The short answer is no. Even if your company has no active visas, you should still renew both your UAE Trade License and your Establishment Card to keep your business compliant.
Although they are connected, they serve different purposes:
|
Document |
Purpose |
|
Trade License |
Gives your company the legal authority to carry out its licensed business activities. Operating with an expired license is not permitted and may result in penalties. |
|
Establishment Card |
Registers your company with the UAE immigration and labour authorities, allowing it to access immigration-related services, including visa processing when required. |
These two documents work together. In most cases:
- A valid Trade License is required to renew or maintain your Establishment Card.
- Government authorities generally expect both records to remain active for your company to stay in good standing.
- If you decide to apply for investor or employee visas later, an expired Establishment Card can delay the process until it is renewed.
I've seen business owners postpone renewing the Establishment Card because they weren't planning to hire staff immediately. Unfortunately, this often creates unnecessary complications when they later need immigration services or other government approvals.
At DhanGuard, we recommend renewing both documents together each year so your company remains fully compliant and ready for future expansion whenever you need it.
